What is minicrew? Local mountain bikers in Jefferson County, Colorado created a volunteer program to assist in the maintenance on Open Space Trails. The Mini Crew Program is designed as an after-work-couple-of-hours volunteer opportunity. Meeting on the 3rd Thursday of the month May through September, mountain bikers join efforts to proactively improve trail conditions and spread goodwill to all trail users.
Our history The Mini-Crew Program started as a great idea, now four years later is a working program. Nine mountain bikers partnered to begin the initiative with crew leader and field training with the JCOS staff. The Mini-Crew Program provides an alternative to the all-day trail work days. Volunteers can join for a couple of hours after work. The majority of our work has been on Apex, Chimney Gulch, White Ranch and Bergen Park with crews ranging from 10-20 people. At the end of the year, the hours spent on the trail are accounted for and a GIANT check is presented to the OSAC board of directors on behalf of all the moutain bikers. It sends a clear message that the mountain community has a deep commitment to maintaining and improving our trail system. The only component missing is YOU! Come join the efforts to give something back to the trails and spread goodwill to all trail users.
Moving Dirt Our crews perform maintenance duties that includes cleaning drains, aligning grade and water mitigation. We armor, de-berm, scoop, clear corridor, rebuild, tamp and greet trail users. Most trail days include a bike ride. Our crews are outfitted with the proper trail maintenance tools. Every event is attended by a collection of talented and well-trained crew leaders. Here's an editorial published in the Volunteer Times!

Hello everybody!

It’s time again for Mini Crew! Our next event is happening Thursday, May 17th, 2012, 5:30 pm.

For our May event, we'll be attending to some maintenance needs that have arisen at Matthews/Winters Park. We'll be meeting in the parking lot at the main trail head, and then proceeding along the Village Ride trail. This time there will be something for everyone, from light trimming and pruning, to the more moderate task of clearing drains. And who knows what else!

You will need to dress as you would for a two hour hike, prepared with work gloves, water, and a jacket or rain slick just in case.

The mini-crew program was started by mountain bikers and is designed as an “after-work-couple-of-hours” trail session.  Our events fall on the 3rd Thursday of each month, from May until September.

We focus on specific tasks assigned by Jefferson County Open Space (JCOS) that support the trail maintenance activities for the JCOS work crews and staff.  Our events provide all trail users an opportunity to actively participate in the support and maintenance of the trail systems, as well as a chance to spread good will to all trail users we encounter.

Tomorrow's trail seminar is cancelled, and a rescheduled event will be announced in the near future.

Sorry, Bunny!

Saturday, April 7th, from 8am til noon

Hey everyone, it's almost time for Minicrew to begin again!  Long time participants and curious onlookers alike are invited to our training session for the season, which will be on Saturday, April 7th, from 8am til noon.   We will begin the morning at the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, and then proceeding out into the field for hands-on experience.

Anyone is welcome to come.  This is our annual re-qualification and start-of-season orientation in Jefferson County Open Space trail maintenance techniques for our crew leaders, but there will plenty of room anyone else who is interested in the hows and whys of JCOS trail building and maintenance.
